About the Event

Mitchelville was established in 1862 and is the first place where previously enslaved Africans in America governed themselves. It is also a place of natural beauty, located on Fish Haul Creek with access to the beach at Port Royal Sound.

On this trip we will discuss the history of this site. Then, we will walk the path to the beach, identifying plants and birds in the maritime forest along the way.

Dress for weather and prepare to walk on uneven ground, including sandy beach for about a mile.

Directions: From the west, take business Rte. 278 (William Hilton Parkway) eastbound. Turn left on Beach City Road. The park is about 2.1 miles straight on Beach City Road. Important note: Do NOT turn off on Beach City Road. Some GPS will try to take you to Fish Haul Beach Park. You want to go to 229 Beach City Road.
