Dolphin Dynamics

Join Brooke Browne, outreach coordinator for the LowCountry Marine Mammal Network, to learn about everyone's favorite marine mammal, the dolphin. Marine mammals create unique bonds with others in their group. In the open ocean, where these groups can be hundreds to thousands strong, we know them as "pods" however, here in the Lowcountry where the total population may only be about 300, they develop smaller, more intimate groups known as "fission-fusion societies." During this program, we will dive in on the different types of relationships our Lowcountry dolphins make and the reasons they form them.

This lecture will be given in the classroom at the Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center. The Maritime Center will be open both before and after for you to visit the exhibit hall.

Brooke has a BS in Marine Science from California State University - Monterey Bay. She volunteered and worked for several years at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and is also a divemaster. In 2019, Brooke and her husband moved to South Carolina where she worked as an educator at the South Carolina Aquarium and joined LMMN just a few months later. Currently, Brooke coordinates stranding responses throughout South Carolina as well as events, volunteers, education programs, social media outreach, and monitoring programs.
